A Sweet Vintage Backyard Wedding Full of DIY Details
BROWN PAPER PARCEL PHOTOGRAPHYWhilst it has been quite some time since this post, Aisle arches are still one of my favourite wedding details! And even more so when they were a little DIY project by the groom like the floral beauty in today’s vintage backyard wedding captured by Jessica Tremp of Brown Paper Parcel. The whole wedding is awash with DIY ideas and the happy couple Bambi & Aden really couldn’t be any cuter…..
After crossing paths on a night out, only to discover they grew up on the same street, Bambi and Aden found they shared more than just the same address. “Aden and I are both lovers of old things and go for weekly thrifting sessions. We also enjoy craft sessions at home, with the record player going.” And when it came to planning their wedding, having a penchant for all things handmade proved to have its perks “We didn’t have to spend very much”, says Bambi, who not only crocheted all their picnic rugs but Aden’s bow tie too!
It was a real family affair though with Bambi’s Mum handmaking their bunting, wedding favours and Bambi’s bouquet using old family heirlooms. Whilst Aden’s parents provided the perfect (budget friendly) venue for their relaxed and intimate celebration – their family home just south of Perth. “We had around 50 people and the venue was the same place Aden’s parents and grandparents got married, so was very special.“
Aden took on a few projects of his own including making the all important aisle arch – although it sounds as though he may need more practice on the DIY front before tackling any larger projects! “Aden made the arch just well enough that it stood looking beautiful for the entire ceremony, before collapsing minutes after we walked back down the aisle!” Bambi recalls.
And Bambi’s sister was on hand to do Bambi’s makeup just the way she likes it – keeping it simple and fresh, allowing her natural beauty to shine, but with a hint of vintage to compliment her fabulous hairstyle that she finished with a few fresh daisies…..
Aden also had his amazing deer print shirt custom made as a surprise for Bambi – how cute?
Their ceremony was anything but conventional, brimming with personal details “We had a very relaxed ceremony, wrote our own vows and had Aden’s Grandad as the surprise ring bearer – we taped the ring boxes under his chair! He was very chuffed.”
After the ceremony guests enjoyed lawn games and sparkles from Velvet Betty – a reproduction pre ’64 styled Bondwood caravan built from scratch to serve as a vintage bar! How cool is betty?…..
For Aden the best surprise was later in the day when Bambi changed from her vintage St. Pucchi ceremony gown into a velvet vintage dress “The velvet dress I wore for the reception was from Swoon Shop Vintage in San Francisco. It was from the 1920’s and was so soft and so different to anything I had ever seen before. I just fell completely in love with it and it fit like a glove as soon as I tried it on”, says Bambi, who I think you will agree looked absolutely gorgeous, and even more importantly comfortable and carefree, in her vintage find…..
Their reception continued the relaxed vibe to their day with mismatched seating (no tables), eclectic lighting and Pizza – yep Pizza! “We wanted it to be quite an informal affair, more like one big, happy party.” I for one would be quite happy with some delicious pizza and a view of that river…..
And true to their style, the couple decided to go forego the traditional wedding in favour of something a little bit different and fun “We had a bake off”, explains Aden. “All the guests brought a cake to enter and we judged according to categories, such as ‘needs longer in the oven’, ‘most delicious’, ‘the prettiest’ etc.” What an extraordinary amount of delicious desserts they. and their guests, got to enjoy…..
I could just eat a slice of that peach and raspberry cake now, with a big dollop of thickened cream….. yum!
Isn’t it just the sweetest celebration you ever saw? I love Aden’s deer print shirt! And Bambi looked simply fabulous, I especially love her vintage inspired hair. Congratulations to the lovely couple Bambi & Aden! And a big thankyou to their photographer Jess of Brown Paper Parcel who captured the smiles, tears and every DIY detail so perfectly.
