Romantic Garden Proposal Inspiration in the Cotswolds

Ferri Photography

With engagement season just around the corner, today’s inspiration shoot couldn’t be any more perfect! So beautiful is it, with its English garden setting, romantic attire and charming table for two, that you could be forgiven for thinking it is an elopement or intimate wedding inspiration. However, this shoot was designed to show how to propose in style and make this magical moment all the more unforgettable….

Photographer Daniela of Ferri Photography shared everything about the setting, the inspiration, the styling and the stunning details….

“Situated in the centre of the Cotswold village of Barnsley, Barnsley House was built in 1697.  With exquisite landscaped gardens you can see why it was so easy to pick Barnsley House and its grounds for our shoot. The cobbled pathways, the hidden private spaces, the canopies of climbing roses and honeysuckle, the sound of trickling water and blackbirds singing.  Barnsley House is a dreamy paradise.

Dewinton Paper Co created a custom stationary suite of hand painted botanical illustrations and a beautiful watercolour of Barnsley House surrounded by rustling trees.

Our model Adele wore the dreamy Luna gown in Smoked Orchard fromTH&TH’s new collection. Made from layers of the softest tulle and featuring one shoulder detail, giving it that romantic, voluminous look. Adele was the perfect canvas to work with and despite her having hair just below the jawline, we were still able to create a relaxed, undone hair up do which suited the style of the shoot perfectly. The finishing touch was a one of a kind, 19th-century, antique, French tiara; a beautiful chic piece that incorporated the dove, a symbol of love.

Phil wore a tweed suite; teamed up with a floral tie and pocket hanky. Keeping it relaxed but still smart for the big occasion. In his pocket he carried a vintage ring box holding a morganite crystal, known as the stone of ‘Divine Love’, engagement ring.

Timelessly romantic floral material in the form of fresh and dried flowers were tied together to create soft and delicate designs by Sarah Harper Floral Design. A mixture of David Austin roses and big blousy pale pink peonies made up the large focal florals, these soft layered petals smudged the edge between the diverse selection of brittle dried grasses and herbs. Colour played an important role; the soft pinky-peach tone that ran throughout gave off a romantic and classic palette. Astrantia and garden clematis were used amongst smaller filler florals which gave the designs the wispy freshly picked look.

Working with the incredibly stunning grounds at Barnsley House meant that we could take inspiration from the garden’s natural colour palette – abundant with the soft pastels of lilacs, pinks, blues and greens. The tablescape was a typically complimentary mix of old and new – with vintage tableware combined with romantic florals and flowing silks which were rather suitably made from plant dyes themselves.

The cake by The Whimsical Cakery took inspiration from the ancient, stone garden walls – creating texture and giving it an antique feel. Further coupled with birds, vines and gold accents.
