20 Delightful Wedding Cake Ideas for the 1950s Loving Bride
Last weeks Snippets, Whispers & Ribbons, which in case you missed it was packed full of the most perfect bridal hair accessories, was just the start of this series of 1950s themed posts. Each Friday over the coming weeks I’ll be looking at how to infuse your celebration with some mid-century inspired styling from hair accessories to wedding cakes, bridal gowns and groom’s attire, bouquets to bridesmaid dresses…..you name it, and need it for your big day, we will be looking at it here and sharing the very best ways to re-create the most fabulous looks for your modern vintage wedding!
The cutting of the cake is the last ceremonial part of a wedding, symbolizing your union and the promises you have made to each other it is (apart from your exit, of course) the grand finale! It is also the last opportunity for some beautiful portraits – I have the photo of Mr E and I cutting our cake on my bedside table, it is one of my absolute favourites. So, given the important part it plays in finishing your day, it is important your wedding cake is a reflection of your wedding, that it captures you and your groom’s personalities and looks lovely in a photo!!
Of course in the 1950s the wedding cake would have been a dense fruit cake iced in white royal icing, with the traditional bride & groom sat on top. Now however, there are no rules when it comes to your cake! It doesn’t even have to be cake if you don’t want it to be – how about a fruit pie, cheesecake, pavlova or a tower of cheese? So how do you evoke the 1950s with your wedding cake? How do you give it a retro air? Well, if white icing doesn’t tickle your fancy, go with something fancy and floral, or go quirky with a fun cake alternative, or have some fun with a kitsch topper; or if you simply can’t choose one cake, display a dessert on vintage furniture and let your guests have their fill!
