American Gothic Harvest Wedding Inspiration

TYLER BRANCH PHOTOGRAPHY

I love this time of year, especially with all of the dark and moody creative editorials we’ve seen and shared of late. And today we’re celebrating Halloween with another one! An utterly bewitching take on a Fall wedding inspired by Grant Wood’s American Gothic, it mixes Victorian drama, with lush seasonal florals, and all in the most ravishing autumnal palette…..

Florist extraordinaire Marisa of Revel Petals is here to tell us all about it….. “A wedding is a transition into the newness of marriage and life as a union. What could be a more perfect inspiration for a moody autumn wedding? With harvest as a major marker of autumn, we wanted to create a contemporary interpretation of Grant Wood’s American Gothic. We imagined our couple as farmers, younger than Grant’s characters yet still embodying the stern, hard weathered perspective of the painting. This harshness is coupled with the vulnerability of love, creating a tense beauty that we weaved throughout the story.”

And Jenni MacLeod of The Blushing Bird added these words….. “Instead of the traditional orange and black colors of Halloween, we focused on a palette of gold and black, accented with moody burgundy, dusty lavender, ethereal whites and muted shades of caramel. While the macabre elements of Halloween could have become too gruesome for a wedding, we used masks of leaves and sticks, prickly flowers, the spiny arms of succulents and dried money tree wisps crafted by Marisa of Revel Petals, and darker mood elements sparingly, to create a hauntingly romantic tone that easily paired with the gothic, Victorian and contemporary style.”
