Art Deco is my absolute favourite era and there’s no doubt the main reason for this is the fabulous fashion!! The jazz age was full of glitz and glamour; it was a period of progressive modernity, luxury and leisure; a time that introduced bobbed hair, marcel waves and short skirts into fashion. Such an exciting time where fashion mirrored the social movement with women escaping the prudish constraints of the Victorian and Edwardian eras and embracing a new found freedom. Whilst hemlines lifted, waistlines dropped; colours became more bold and with dresses requiring less in the way of fabric, more emphasis was put on texture with exquisite embellishment that would shimmer on the dance floor.

But there was another side to the Art Deco era – it wasn’t all flappers and marcel waves! There was a more demure and elegant side to the era, the side that has been brought to life recently by the wonderful Downton Abbey. Think demure bias cut gowns of silk-satin, with cowl backs or capelets, decorated with lace for a more simple and refined look…..
