A Timeless Rainy Day Wedding

Photography - Violet Short

Sunshine may be what most couples dream of for their big day, but rain only added to the moody romance of old souls Tricia & Ben’s timeless wedding. Captured at the beautiful Laurel Hall it is stunning, love-filled celebration that no rain could ever dampen…..

A few words from bride Tricia…. “We have always been old souls. I wanted to reflect that by incorporating many vintage pieces throughout the already beautiful historic venue. All of the candelabras, vases, and picture frames for the table numbers were found at vintage shops. Our guest book was not a book at all but rather old postcards from throughout the US. We found an old mailbox at Midland in Indianapolis where guests could deposit the postcards.

To keep current I wanted to marry vintage with bohemian. To do so my palette was a mix between muted romantic and earthy colors. Small details like my macarame table runner and mismatched colored vases with wildflowers were added to create a the bohemian flair. I think we achieved the perfect balance.”

THE FLOWERS

“My bouquets were mainly arranged with filler flowers, the unsung heroes. I love the uniqueness that each filler provides that I wanted those to be the main focus. Our arch was donned with faux flowers that I had purchased all throughout the planning process, trying to stay with my colour palette.”

FAVOURITE MOMENT

“Sharing our vows was a highlight of ours. We had written our own vows and both worked on them up until the last minute. We have had these feelings for each other for the last ten years and finally being able to express them to one another was something we truly will never forget.  It meant so much to have everyone we loved celebrate our big day with us, it was fun to let loose on the dance floor!”

SPLURGE & SAVE

“The most important part to us the finding the perfect venue and photographer. The venue served as the cornerstone for all of our inspiration. The building itself is so vast with ornate historic detail that minimal decor was needed. With the vintage template already in place, it was so easy to build upon that with our wedding.   Finding the perfect photographer was a very big deal for us. Years from now we will forget about all of the small details but we will always have the photos to serve as a reminder.”

WORDS OF WEDDING WISDOM

If you are paying for your own wedding, my advice would be to start saving up your money as soon as your are engaged. Everything flies by so fast that you think you may have all this time, but you don’t!

My other piece of advice would be to postpone your honeymoon. Planning the wedding is hard enough so adding the honeymoon on top of that is nothing but stress. We postponed and now have the time and energy to start saving and planning for our dream honeymoon to Ireland!”

THE BRIDESMAIDS

“The bridal party sported out favorite colors. My bridesmaids in dark green & the groomsmen with rust orange ties. An odd pairing but we were able to bring it all together with the green pocket squares and boutonnieres. ”

THE FAVORS

“Our favors were a box of our favorite things from Trader Joe’s, dark chocolate covered almonds & espresso beans! We also hand made name plates for assigned seating. The name plates were constructed with green paper, clear overlay & a copper wax seal. I had handwritten every name on each name plate in my “best” calligraphy. “

THE CAKE

“Picking out our wedding cake was one of our favorite parts of planning. We tested many flavor combinations and we each had gotten to choose our own tier with the ones we liked most. Ben chose a butter cake with italian mousse and salted caramel filling & I chose an almond cake with italian mousse and apricot filling. The outside was iced with a thin crumb coat and decorated with flowers from my florist. I wanted the cake to be very minimal.”

THE PHOTOGRAPHY

Words can’t express how perfect our photographer Violet Short was for us. Her vintage style is exactly what I wanted for our big day. Not only did she somehow make the unfortunate rain look desirable, but she was that dedicated to capturing the photos she was out there with us in it! She used the rainy day to her advantage and gave us the most beautiful moody photos. We were very thankful to have her be such a big part of our wedding.”
