Having been friends long before they became a couple, Marguerita & Aaron knew once they started dating this was it! About a year and a half later they became engaged in the most romantic way, which all started with a private sailboat ride down the Willamette River and ended up in Ladd’s Addition, “the same part of Portland where he asked me to be his girlfriend.” Here Aaron had laid seven letters with candles along the base of seven trees lining the sidewalk, “each letter contained words of love and affirmation, reasons he wanted to marry me, and reasons we were better together than apart,” Marguerita says. “At the end of the sidewalk awaited the International Rose Test Garden, flowers scattered in a circle, and all of our closest friends,” which was when Aaron got down on one knee and presented Marguerita with a vintage engagement ring. *swoon*

The couple were engaged for two years and five months, before they tied the knot on a warm and sunny evening in September, in their hometown of Portland, with some 120 friends and family there to share in the celebration.

“Our wedding was everything we wanted it to be, it was small, simple and intimate. We held the ceremony at the church we both attend. Here we were able to attain the clean simple and semi rustic vintage feel we were going for. We hardly brought in any decorations because the church looks beautiful as it is. The mismatched chairs, old rugs and thrift items gave it just the feel we wanted.”

Marguerita designed the couples stationery suite herself. The pieces were printed locally on kraft paper with white ink, for a warm and slightly informal aesthetic and included a portrait of her and Aaron taken during their engagement session with their wedding photographer, Maria Lamb.

Aaron paired his dark gray suit with a black bow tie from ASOS and suspenders from American Apparel.

Marguerita donned a flowy Leann Marshall gown she found at The English Department, along with shoes from Sam Edelman, all topped off with an intricate gold-colored headpiece by Chic Vintage Brides favourite Mignonne Handmade. Her beautiful bouquet of ranunculus, dahlias, garden roses, amaranthus, yarrow, and nandina was created by Forest and Field and had an organic, just-picked feel.

Sporting matching pants and suspenders, which they paired with maroon ties from ASOS, Aaron’s groomsmen were his closest friends Ly, Jacob, Nathan, Garrett, and Austin.

Marguerita’s bridesmaids were her closest friends Kaeli, Shayla, and Krystal, and her sisters-in-law Anna and Andrea. They each wore identical cranberry hued dresses from Target perfect for Fall.

Returning to a special place that played a large role in their relationship, the couple chose to marry at Door of Hope—the church they had attended before they started dating.

The pastor and church staff helped the bride pick out the mismatched ceremony seating, which are an original part of the church. “It added to a look of vintage, things collected over time,” Marguerita explained.

The chalkboard was designed and hand-lettered by the crafty bride. “I just sketched all the information I wanted on the chalkboard and used a chalkboard marker to perfect it,” she says – making it sound oh so easy!

Marguerita’s brother walked her down the aisle to “Re: Stacks” by Bon Iver. “This is one of Aaron’s favorite artists,” Marguerita says. “I wanted to choose something that was meaningful to the both of us.” The couple exchanged self-penned vows, something that was very special for both of them, and Pastor Josh White of Door of Hope officiated the service. After the wedding ceremony Marguerita and Aaron took communion together as their first act as a married couple, while close friends sang for them.

“Our reception was held at North Star Ballroom, which provided the right backdrop to show off the items we rented and thrifted to decorate this great party for our closest family and friends.” Keeping decor simple, with just some rustic linens, and some fall hued florals by Forest and Field  in mason jars atop wooden chargers as centrepiece, really allowed the venue to shine.

The newlyweds sat at their own special table adorned with a more lavish centerpiece and handmade bunting spelling out “Mr. and Mrs.”

The couple skipped the traditional icing covered wedding cake in favour of a delicious looking dessert table with a variety of sweet treats, including pies, macarons, cupcakes, cookies, lemon bars, and brownies from Zupan’s Market and, as healthier alternatives, gluten-free vegan cupcakes by Back to Eden and vegan cookies by Laughing Planet.

So that they didn’t miss out on the all important cutting of the cake a vegan strawberry lemon cake was created as an extra treat. “We wanted something simple, and Back to Eden did a great job executing that,” Marguerita says.

The couple had their first dance to the Fleet Foxes version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.”….the perfect end to their perfect day!
