Vera Wang’s Beautifully Bold Spring 2013 Bridal Collection

You may have noticed my slight obsession with coloured bridal dresses, and there is always one designer who never ceases pushing the boundary in terms of bridal colours (who can forget her lingerie inspired black and nude collection) and who never fails to to excite with her ever awe inspiring collections, that designer of course is Vera Wang.

And in unveilling her fresh, inspiring, and vibrant Spring 2013 Collection, full of frothy skirts, floral details and fanciful embellishments, yet again, Vera Wang did not disappoint……

From the moment I first glimpsed Scarlett O’Hara in THAT scandalously scarlet dress in Gone With the Wind, when I was just a wee one, I swore to my Mum that should I ever get married, it would be in red!……

Gone with the Wind Scarlett O'Hara in the Scarlet Dress

Sadly it wasn’t to be but, as god is my witness, had these glorious gowns been in existence on New Years Eve 2010, I would have worn one!

From ruby red through cranberry to an almost black dahlia red each and every colour and design makes me gasp, sigh….. and want to get married again! Vera herself described the inspiration for her latest collection as, “The symbolism of red—boldly romantic, charming, protective, grand, seductive, sexy.  From dahlia to scarlet, crimson and vermilion. It’s a celebration of love.”

I have never truly understood the negativity around the colour red in western cultures, where it is used as a symbol of guilt, sin, seduction and anger – although I quite like it (and how naughty it makes me feel when I put on a pair of red heels :-)) Conversely, red in Chinese culture has much more positive connotations being associated with honor, success, fortune, fertility, happiness and passion, it is also thought to bring good luck and is considered a strong color that can drive away evil spirits. Often, in Chinese, as well as Japanese and Indian, weddings a bride wears red for this very reason.
