A 1950s Rockabilly Inspired Wedding with a Tea Length Wedding Dress

If you’re a mid-century maven I have such a treat for you! With today’s wedding being described by the happy couple celebrating, Jennifer & Rod, as being Rockabilly, 1950s and Kitsch. With a tea length wedding dress, the most fabulous hair & makeup and a bowls club reception (yep, you read that right!) it is a swoon-fest of style, fun and DIY details, and Anna of Pixie Rouge Photography was there to capture it all…..

The romantic proposal took place in Kings Park, overlooking the fair city of Perth and the languid sweep of the Swan River. Jennifer describes it perfectly…. “It was a warm and bright summer day, with the sky cloudless and high and blue as a polished sapphire. We had a esky full of tasty treats and champagne as well as the ring Rodney was hiding! I was wondering why he seemed nervous but I soon found out why. I couldn’t have been happier.” The couple gave themselves just under 12 months to plan their big day, no mean feat given the number of DIY projects (including the wedding dress!) “The lead up to the wedding took nearly a year, amidst a move, change of jobs and a gut wrenching hot summer in a tiny apartment. There’s a lot to do when you organise your wedding yourselves. It was a long haul of work, but it ended being well worth the time put into it. We have a great love for all things 1950s and we really wanted to make sure our big day showcased that love.”

“My hair and makeup was all the work of Dames of Distinction. These ladies were amazing, I couldn’t recommend them enough! They can even organise high tea for you to enjoy while they work hard to make you look amazing for the day!”

“I am really lucky that my Mum is such an amazing dress maker! I looked at as many Vogue fashion shoots from the 1950s as I could find on the internet before deciding on the perfect style of dress for me. My Mum then made a toile, we bought fabric on Ebay and a few months later the dress was complete. A few last adjustments were made the day before the wedding, which was a bit scary! I couldn’t have been happier, it turned out exactly has I had dreamed and it felt extra special that my Mum made it for me.”

“We had 35 bunches of Easter Daisies delivered and the bridesmaids and I made the bouquets and table arrangements ourselves.”

” My wedding ring is a beautiful vintage 1930’s black onyx and diamond ring we found in Keshett. And for Rod we chose a classic Gold Band from Dora.”

“We had a beautiful 1962 EH Holden, that our friends Dad owns, to ride to the reception in, which was perfect and a lot of fun!

“The Coburg Moreland Bowls Club was the perfect setting for our reception, with every corner filled with something kitsch we didn’t have to do much to decorate. On the tables we had vintage tablecloths with candles and small bunches of Easter Daisies in jars on top of hardcover vintage books.”

Pearls of Wedding Wisdom from the Bride…..

“Pinterest is great for inspiration but try not to re-create other peoples weddings and be confident in creating a wedding that really represents you both as a couple. It’s not about perfection it’s a celebration of the union between two people and that’s the most special part of the day.”
