Glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood – Ideas for a Wedding inspired by 1940s Hollywood

After spending a blissful afternoon watching classic Joan Crawford (in the fierce Mildred Pierce) I was inspired to pull together an inspiration board for those brides wishing to channel the style and glamour of the starlets of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

What better colour scheme than Midnight Blue and Gold, a dramatic duo that just screams opulence and elegance……

Elie Saab Dress ,  Midnight Moon , Kissing couple , Midnight Arch , Bird fabric , Gold Leaf Crown ,  Life is Beauty Full , Midnight Blue Chandalier

The perfect colours for a late afternoon Autumn or Winter, black tie wedding, flowing into the evening, it just epitomises glamour – think cocktails, chandaliers, with musk scented candles twinkling in gold votives……

Bridesmaid Dress – Belle & Bunty (as found on Love My Dress), Shoes – BHLDN Sun-Glinted Peep-Toes, Chandalier Image – SMP, Invitation – Bella Figura Bejweled, Brides Bouquet Image – SMP Grooms Boutonniere Image – SMP , Headband/Tiara – Twigs & Honey , Earrings – Delezhen on Etsy, Red Lips Makeup Look – Love Audrey on Pinterest, Eyeshadow Look – Snippet & Ink on Pinterest, Necklace – a similar one is available from BHLDN (sorry, do please let me know if you know where this exact necklace is from)

I love this Belle & Bunty Bridesmaid’s dress, the satin looks like ink in this colour, it is vintage 1940s styling – Jesus Peiro has a similarly styled dress in lace in the latest collection, it is oh so pretty!

This sort of glamour really demands a fabulous bridal dress! At the moment I am loving texture – lots of lovely layers and luxurious adornments on a wedding dress would look equally dramatic and really catch the candle light. Karen Willis Holmes‘s design Gabriella with it’s sweetheart neckline, fishtail silhouette and full layered tiered circle skirt, adding fullness, would look incredible. The bodice has woven organza detail with graded shading from soft white to a rich cream at the hem……

The 1940s was the first era of the body con, with designers using tailoring to acentuate assets, be they shoulders, waists or hips. Emulate the Queen of shoulders, Joan Crawford, with something like this Marchesa dress I love (the eagle eyed may remember already seeing it once on CVB in the Finest Vintage Inspired Bridal Gowns from NYC Bridal Fashion Week post) So chic and unique with its shoulder adornments……

Or Jenny Packham‘s Saskia, reminiscent of the infamous Letty Lynton dress, with its shoulder details and floaty a line skirt……

Or this Jenny Packham piece of wedding dress perfection from her 2012 collection (available in Silver or Ivory) for me has everything – tailoring, shoulders, shimmer & sparkle plus the most flattering waist line!

If Midnight Blue and Gold is too moody, or to lighten a Spring or Summer wedding, then accents and highlights in mauve, yellow or dusky powder blue would all work wonderfully well, and without losing any of the glamour and sophistication.
