Chic Vintage Bride – Madge Elliott
February 29, 2012
Today’s Chic Vintage Bride‘s wedding photo has graced the page of many of the greatest blogs – and rightly so! It is one of the most elegant weddings, captured by incredible photographer of the time Sam Hood.
Leah Madeleine Elliott, affectionately known as Madge, married Cyril Joseph Ritchard on 16 September 1935 in a crowded St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney.
Theatrical favourites and dancing stars of their time, their glorious wedding became part of Sydney folklore – it is said that fifty police were required to control the crowd of five thousand awaiting the couple outside the cathedral! It was after over 10 years of being partners that they became engaged – Cyril himself joked that they married ‘after ten years of whirlwind courtship.’
The bride wore a London designed wedding gown made of deep ivory stiffened lace. It was closely fitted around the bodice and billowed beautifully out at the knees with a sumptuous frill at the hem.
The groom looked incredible dapper (and uncannily like Fred Astaire!) in a top hat and tails.
Madge held a bouquet of lilies and was attended by bridesmaids dressed in china blue. The female attendants wore fashionable sari scarves, the first ever seen in Sydney, held to their heads by coronets of blue pearls.
This has to be one of the most perfectly captured wedding photos of all time……
Taken at exactly the right moment…… I just love movement.

Such a gorgeous wedding and incredible photos – surely it is impossible not to love them?
