DIY Fancy French Twist Bridal Updo

Today I am bringing you the third in a series of 5 DIY posts from the brilliant (and lovely) Haley of The Bride Link, and after a decor DIY and an edible DIY, today’s is a beauty DIY – in every sense of the word! A romantic updo, with a loose and relaxed feel that makes it not only perfect for today’s modern bride but also super versatile…..

Styled with some fresh flowers it has a boho vibe, and yet replace the flowers with some sparkly diamante and it would instantly add the elegant finishing touch for a more classic or vintage bride. Anyway, I will hand you over to the lovely lady herself, Haley, for a little introduction to this elegant DIY…..”I am in love with the wedding braid trend I’ve been seeing in recent years, so I am very excited to share this unique french braid twist tutorial from MOPS Hair Designers and Danielle Evans Photography! Our bride’s beautiful make-up is by Suzanne Clayton Make-up Artist and her hair is finished off with a stunning floral comb from Beauty by Megan Floral Events.”

Before Beginning…..

It is important to realize before starting this hairstyle, that it is named for the way it looks, not the way it is created. Deanna from MOPS Hair Designers shows that by criss-crossing and twisting pieces of hair then pinning them with bobby pins, you can create a twisted, french-braid look without actually braiding the hair (if it was definite braids you were looking for, take a peek at this post)

TIP: This hairstyle relies heavily on using the correct size and type of bobby pins. Have the sizes and types of bobby pins seen in the below photo on hand before starting this hairstyle.

1. It is always easiest to create a wedding hairstyle after first fully curling the hair. Once curled, gently run your fingers through the curls to loosen them.

2. Next, create a halo section of hair in the back, twist it, and pin it with a bobby pin. This twist is going to be the center point for the rest of the hairstyle.

3. Collect hair from each side of the head, cross them over the center twist, and pin them with bobby pins.

4. Create a loop/curl from hair in the center of the head and pin it in place. Repeat step three, but this time, tuck the hair you gather from the sides of the head around the loop you just made. Repeat this process until you reach the bottom of the head.

Tip: If your hairstyle does not look just like these photos, THAT’S OK! This hairstyle is a free-form hairstyle that will look a little different each time you do it.

5. Braid the last portion of the hair and tie with a clear hairband.

6. Spend a few minutes going back with open bobby pins pinning the hair in various places to make it look more uniform. Open bobby pins are perfect for pinning hair that looks too loose or out of place.

TIP: Once it looks how you want it to, spray with hairspray to improve hold.
