Time for a Bridal Tiara & Crown Revival

If you are a regular reader of Chic Vintage Brides then you will already know that the subject of today’s post is something of a love (verging on obsession) of mine, and it has been for quite some time. Why? Because more often than not it combines two of my most favourite things – diamonds and a good royal wedding 🙂

Crowns and tiaras have long been the bridal accessory of choice for royals (I can’t say that word now without saying it roy-als, thanks Lorde!) , the rich, famous and refined. It is a classic, timeless and often heirloom accessory; cherished and lovingly passed down through generations to adorn the heads of grandmothers, mothers and daughters….. I think that (as well as the obvious sparkle element) is what I love most about this particular bridal accessory.

And with this in mind, following the recent trends for first the Juliet Cap Veils and then Flower Crowns, well I am now firmly of the belief it is time for a revival of the most elegant, beautiful and darn right swanky of bridal accessories, the crown or tiara! So, inspired by some of the most beautiful brides (real and otherwise) of recent years I have pulled together a selection of some of my favourite bridal diadems fit for a Princess (for if you can’t dress like a princess on your wedding day, when can you??)…….

Of course it is perhaps no coincidence that the reappearance of Tiaras coincided with the royal wedding of royal weddings.

Of course, the wedding of Kate & Wills, wasn’t the only one to capture our imaginations of late. Following the long awaited wedding in Downton Abbey, the wedding world has been awash with beautiful Lady Mary inspired bridal tiaras…..

And you know, in my search for the most perfect crowns and tiaras I discovered a crown doesn’t have to be bejeweled to be beautiful!

Despite my love of all that glitters though, my favourite crown is far simpler than any of the above. A look that I associate with the 1940s and WWII, when cash was tight and pennies were pinched and the average bride (including my ever so chic Nan, bless her) couldn’t afford a crown of diamonds or jewels, buds, wax and beads were used in their place to create breathtaking headpieces…..

This style of crown is far more bohemian and subtle than your diamond tiara, but equally as unforgettable…..

Aren’t they fabulous? If you love this style, and like the brides of the time have a lot more time than money you could always attempt to make your own Wax Bud Tiara or Crown following this fabulous tutorial by adorned event design…..

…..the results look well worth the effort!

So, are you convinced by my call for a tiara and crown revival? I think it is well past time ladies, so embrace your inner Princess!

Before I go, I feel I should clarify that I am in no way an expert on this subject, nor do I claim to be; merely a fan! So please do forgive any inaccurate references. If you wish to try to unravel the difference between a crown, coronet, diadem, tiara oh and kokoshnik (which I didn’t just make up!) there is a fantastic Tiara Terminology 101 post on one of my favourite blogs for whiling away an afternoon, Sartorial Splendour – so do go and take a squiz!
